CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian College men’s soccer head coach Bret Boulware announced the addition of 10 student-athletes for the 2008 season to the PC men’s soccer program on Sunday.
"This is one of the strongest classes on paper that we have recruited since I began my time here,” remarked Boulware. “My assistant Ed Joyce has worked very hard in helping to secure a class that we think will be competitive with everyone we play. Our challenge now is to get our guys to play together. With this many new faces, we have a hard task at hand during preseason to get our current players to mold with these new recruits. It is a challenge that our coaching staff is eager to undertake."
Andrew Chavarria will join the Blue Hose men’s soccer program out of Lexington High School in Lexington, S.C. He is the son of Donna and Gonzalo Chavarria and he played for head coach Will Gettys at Lexington.
During his time at Lexington, Chavarria was named All-Region in 2007. He was chosen Lexington’s Most Improved Player after the 2006 season. He was also named All-Region and All-State in 2008.
A midfielder, Chavarria was chosen to the Clash of the Carolinas All-Star game after his senior season.
He played his club soccer for Mark Berson’s Lexington United ’89 squad. His club team was the 2007 SCYSA State Champion in 2007 and was a state finalist in 2008.
Chavarria, who has four times been a member of the South Carolina Olympic Development Program (ODP) team for his age group is the second member of his family to play college soccer. His father, Gonzalo, played for Fairleigh-Dickinson.
Boulware describes Chavarria as a “central player with good vision who can also distribute the ball extremely well.”
Michael Czulinski played his high school soccer at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C. He played for Dave Clark at Spring Valley.
During his time at Spring Valley the Vikings claimed the state championship in 2007 and finished the 2008 season as the 4A state runner-ups. Czulinski was named to the Clash of the Carolinas All-Star team after his senior season.
Czulinski played his club soccer for Mark Berson’s Lexington United ’89 squad. He was the captain of Lexington United during the 2005 season.
Czulinski has been a member of South Carolina’s ODP team for his age group since 2003. He attended the USYSA Region III Camp in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
“Michael is a big, strong athlete who is extremely versatile,” noted Boulware. “He can come in and compete for numerous positions on the field for us from the outset.”
Donald Gibson transfers to PC from Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Born in Augsburg, Germany, Gibson is a native of Ellicott City, Md. He is the son of Fern and Donald Gibson, Sr.
Gibson played his high school soccer for Mike St. Martin at Mount Saint Joseph High School. During his time at Mount Saint Joseph he was named All-State in Maryland in 2007.
A defender, Gibson was on Maryland’s ODP team for his age group from 2002-2007. He played Super-Y soccer from 2000-02 and in 2008.
“Donald is an athletic marking back, who will help shore up the back for us,” said Boulware.
Paul Jackson joins the Blue Hose men’s soccer program as a transfer from Young Harris College. A defender/midfielder, Jackson played his high school soccer for Central High School in Carrollton, Ga. He played for Drew Ebensburger at Central and he is the son of Theresa and Broderick Head.
The Gatorade High School Player of the Year in Georgia during the 2006 season, Jackson has spent the last two years at Young Harris. During his time at Young Harris, Jackson, a defender, was named Honorable Mention All-Region in both 2006 and 2007.
“Paul is a strong defender who comes to PC with great credentials, which include being named the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year,” said Boulware. “I look for him to make an impact with us right away.”
Lewis Makin joins the Blue Hose out of Mill Creek High School in Buford, Ga. Makin was born in Peterborough, England and he is the son of Sharon and Stephen Makin.
Makin was the team captain his senior season at Mill Creek. He graduated from Mill Creek on the Honor Roll and he is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
“Lewis is a central player,” noted Boulware. “He reads the game extremely well and he has good size and presence in the middle of the park.”
A native Colombian, Juan Ocampo comes to PC from Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, Fla. A left winger who Boulware describes as a crafty player, Ocampo is the son of Patricia Fernandez and German Ocampo. He played for Hernan “Chico” Borja at Coral Glades High School.
Ocampo was named the Coral Glades Most Valuable Player in both 2007 and 2008. He played varsity soccer for four years and he finished his high school career with 34 goals and 82 assists.
Tanner Osborne comes to PC as a goalkeeper out of Lexington High School where he played for Will Gettys. He is the son of Sandy and Ben Osborne.
Osborne was the Region Player of the Year in 2008. He was also chosen to the 2008 South Carolina 4A All-State team. The All-Area Player of the Year in 2008, he was named to the Clash of the Carolinas All-Star game after his senior season.
Osborne played his high school soccer for Mark Berson’s Lexington United ’89 squad.
“Tanner is a goalkeeper with great size,” said Boulware. “He is a great athlete and we are lucky to have him join us at PC.”
Thomas Palma comes to PC out of Greenville High School in Greenville, S.C. He rejoins PC assistant Ed Joyce at PC. During his junior season, Joyce led Palma and the rest of the Red Raiders to the 2007 South Carolina 3A State Championship. The team ended the year ranked No. 1 in the country.
Palma is the son of Claire Dillon-Palma and Terry Palma.
A defender, Palma was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player at the Wando Tournament in 2007. A two-sport athlete at Greenville, Palma was given the Coaches’ Award for the Greenville swim team in 2007. He was named to the Clash of the Carolinas All-Star game after his senior season in 2008.
“Thomas is a big, strong defender,” said Boulware. “He works hard and he is very strong in the air.”
Yinka Salaam joins the Blue Hose men’s soccer program as someone who can play both the forward and wing positions. He is transferring to PC from Kingston University in England.
Boulware puts it simply when describing Salaam, “look for Yinka to score goals.”
An attacking midfielder who can also play up top, Kashif Siddiqi transfers to PC from Eckerd College in Florida. A native of London, England, Siddiqi is of Pakistan descent and he is currently playing for the Pakistan National Team in the Asian Cup.
He is the son of Shamim Akhter and Mumtaz Siddigi.
“Kash is a true threat to score a goal at any moment,” said Boulware. “He brings excitement. We expect him to be a total player who will also be able to tally some points for us during his time at PC.”
The Blue Hose open their second season in NCAA Division I soccer at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 at Martin Stadium in Clinton, S.C. against Wofford.

The Big South Posts Four Players in MLS Supplemental Draft
The Big South Conference had four players chosen in the MLS supplemental draft on Thursday afternoon. Coastal Carolina’s Mkhokheli Dube was the Big South’s highest pick as the New England Revolution choose him as the eighth pick in the first round. Liberty’s Adrian Bumbut went to the Chicago Fire as the 12th pick in the second round. In the third round, the New York Red Bulls chose Winthrop’s John Gilkerson as the seventh pick as teammate Saidi Isaac was the 13th pick in the round by the New England Revolution.
Dube ranked 14th in the NCAA in both points (2.21) and goals per game (0.65) and was named the Big South Conference Player of the Year.
Dube led the Big South during the regular season in points scored (27), while finishing second in goals (11) and third in assists (five). He was named the Big South Player of the Week a league-record four times this season and was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, Oct. 7. He tallied five game-winning goals on the year. Dube was also First Team All-Conference selection for the second year in a row.
Dube led Coastal to a perfect 6-0 record in the Big South this season, helping CCU became just the fifth team in the history of the Big South to finish with a perfect conference record. The Bulawayo, Zimbabwe native totaled 16 goals and 10 assists in two season with the Chanticleers after transferring from NAIA powerhouse Lindsey Wilson.
Dube led the Blue Raiders to the 2005 NAIA championship, while earning a spot on the NAIA All-Tournament Team.
The Revolution fell in the MLS Cup, 2-1, as CCU alum Joseph Ngwenya (2000-03) netted a goal in the 61st minute to help propel the Houston Dynamo to the title.
Bumbut was selected in the second round of the 2008 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft.
Bumbut becomes the fourth Flames soccer player drafted by a MLS team. The forward was taken in the second round by the Chicago Fire, joining former Liberty teammate Osei Telesford. He joins Telesford, Darryl Roberts and Hollis Donaldson as Liberty players drafted by MLS squads. All four players have been selected in the past three years.
"The Liberty Soccer family is excited about Adrian being drafted by the Chicago Fire,” stated Flames Head Coach Jeff Alder. “They are a first-class enterprise, and I feel they will provide a great environment for him to grow as a player. Bumbut helped lead Liberty to its first-ever Big South Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Men’s College Soccer Cup this past season. The forward completed his career ranked fourth on the Liberty all-time points list with 79 markers, while tying for fourth on the school’s all-time goals list with 32. The Zalau, Romania native garnered All-South Atlantic Region second team honors this fall, after finishing tied for second in the Big South Conference with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists. His goal total also tied him for second on the conference’s goal list. Bumbut led the Flames in scoring for the third-straight year.
The forward was named an All-Big South first-team member this season and also was selected to the VaSID All-State first team. Bumbut led the conference with five game-winning goals, as the Flames posted a 13-5-2 record.
Bumbut, who graduated from Liberty in December, reports to training camp with the Fire next week.

Isaac was one of four players taken by the Revolution. Fellow Big South Conference member Kheli Dube of Coastal Carolina, Chris Tierney from Virginia and Kyle Altman from Trinity (TX) were also drafted.
The Eldoret, Kenya native was the 2006 Big South Conference Player of the Year after scoring 17 goals and dishing out six assists for 40 points as he helped Winthrop to its second conference championship in five years. He was also named to NSCAA/adidas South Atlantic Region First Team. He was named to College Soccer and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the week for a four-goal performance in an 8-1 victory over conference foe Liberty. That performance also earned him National Player of the Week for Soccertimes.com. Isaac ranked 7th nationally in scoring and ninth in goals per game. As a senior, Isaac was named the Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year, the College Soccer News Pre-Season All-America Team and named to the Herman Trophy Watch List. His production was down a little bit in as he continued to draw more and more attention each year from opposing defenses. Buffs' Lauffer Headed to Trinidad and Tobago
CANYON, Texas - West Texas A&M men's and women's soccer coach Butch Lauffer will lend his coaching talent to Trinidad and Tobago as he has been named as an assistant coach for the country's Under-17 Women's National Team.
Lauffer is joining the coaching staff of Randy Waldrum, of Notre Dame, as Trinidad and Tobago prepares to host the 2008 CONCACAF Women's U-17 Championship. CONCACAF stands for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.
Action for the tournament begins July 17 and runs through July 26, and games will be played at Bacolet's Dwight Yorke Stadium and Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya. The field of competitors includes Canada, Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
This is the first year of the CONCACAF U-17 Women's tournament, with the winner along with two other teams advancing to the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, which takes place October 30-November 16 in New Zealand.

Greenville, S.C. - Furman soccer standouts Rob Victor and Kate Myatt were named as two of the 21 recipients of the third annual Coleman Lew Leadership Award at the Southern Conference's annual meetings in Hilton Head, S.C., Wednesday night.
Coleman Lew & Associates, Inc., a national executive search firm, and the Southern Conference announced the selection of 21 student athletes as recipients of the third annual Coleman Lew Leadership Award which recognizes scholar-athletes from each of the Southern Conference's 11 member institutions.
Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award recipients.
Victor, a native of Aiken, S.C., appeared in 20 matches and netted one goal while helping lead Furman to a 19-4-0 overall record and 7-0-0 SoCon mark. The junior helped Furman to the Southern Conference regular season and tournamen titles, as well as, an NCAA Tournament victory over Campbell.
Myatt started in all 23 matches for the Furman women's team an anchored a defense that allowed just 24 goals all season. The junior from Marietta, Ga., guided Furman to a 16-6-1 record, SoCon Tournament title and berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Barnes & Dugoni Voted As Captains For 2008 Season
DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men’s soccer team announced its captains for the 2008 season today, with rising senior defenders Darrius Barnes and Graham Dugoni earning the honors. The Blue Devils will have six seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and at least six freshmen making up their team in the fall, as well as a new coaching staff led by Duke alum John Kerr.
Barnes, a native of Raleigh, N.C., has played in 58 games over three years with 51 starts. He has tallied nine assists from his position as an outside defender and is responsible for the Blue Devils long throw-in plays. Barnes logged the third-most minutes on the team in 2007 with 1,645. He has also taken 15 shots over three seasons.
Dugoni, who hails from Portland, Ore., has seen action in 49 matches and made starts in 42 of those. The defender has scored three career goals on nine shots and added one assist in aiding the offensive effort. Dugoni played the most minutes of any Blue Devil last year with 1,820.
The 2008 Blue Devils will return six of 11 starters from the 2007 squad that went 11-8-1, placed third in the ACC and reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. Their complete incoming freshmen class will be announced later this spring.

He has tallied nine assists from his position as an outside defender and is responsible for the Blue Devils long throw-in plays. Barnes logged the third-most minutes on the team in 2007 with 1,645. He has also taken 15 shots over three seasons.
Dugoni, who hails from Portland, Ore., has seen action in 49 matches and made starts in 42 of those. The defender has scored three career goals on nine shots and added one assist in aiding the offensive effort. Dugoni played the most minutes of any Blue Devil last year with 1,820.
The 2008 Blue Devils will return six of 11 starters from the 2007 squad that went 11-8-1, placed third in the ACC and reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. Their complete incoming freshmen class will be announced later this spring.
Men's Soccer Adds Two Additional Newcomers For Next Season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB head coach Mike Getman announced the addition of two more newcomers who will play for the men's soccer team beginning next season. Daniel Martin (Vestavia, Ala./Vestavia HS) and Andrew Barsalona (Stoney Creek, Canada/Cardinal Newman Secondary) join previous signees Chris Williams (Pearl, Miss./Pearl HS) and Babyele Sodade (Windsor, Canada/Holy Names) as members of the 2008 men's soccer recruiting class.
"With the addition of Andrew and Daniel, this has turned in to a very good recruiting class," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I expect all four of these young men to have a positive impact on our team and our campus."
Martin is a 5-11, 165-pound midfielder who has terrific potential and a knack for finding the back of the net. While at Vestavia High School playing under head coach Rick Grammer, Martin was the captain of his team and earned first-team all-metro accolades as a senior. Following his junior season where he competed in the State of Alabama All-Star game, Martin led his team offensively, as he collected 23 goals and 17 assists as a senior.
Martin played his club soccer with the Vestavia Steamers under coach Luke Whittle.
Getman feels Martin is capable of making a big impact at UAB.
"Daniel is quick and athletic," Getman said. "His versatility gives him the ability to play several positions. I expect him to be very successful with us."
Like Martin, Barsalona is a midfielder who has a lot of talent and has the ability to challenge for playing time right away. While at Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School under head coach Mark Kovacs, Barsalona was the team's leading scorer and selected as the team's captain and most valuable player last season.
Barsalona played his club soccer under coach Phil Iafrati with the Oakville Bluestars. He led his team to the 2007 Under-17 Ontario Indoor Soccer League championship. Barsalona is also a member of the Canadian U15-U17 Youth National Team.
Getman is excited about the addition of Barsalona and sees him as someone who can come and contribute immediately.
"Andrew is a very exciting player," Getman said. "He brings speed and skill to our midfield. I expect him to make a big impact right away."
The duo joins Sodade and Williams, who signed with the team back in early February.
Sodade played at Holy Names High School under head coach Dave Kollof. He helped lead Holy Names to back-to-back Provincial Championships in 2006 and 2007. He was tabbed first-team all-city and first-team all-region in 2006 and 2007, and was also named the 2006 Junior Athlete of the Year. Additionally, he was a three-time most valuable player at Holy Names in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Sodade played his club ball with Windsor FC National club team under head coach Frank Chiandussi. While there, Sodade helped lead his squad to the Ontario Cup finals in 2007.
"Babayele is a great athlete and a great student," Getman said. "He is exactly the kind of person we want at UAB. I expect him to compete right away."
Getman also expects Williams to become a solid contributor. The 6-2, 195 pound midfielder comes to UAB after a standout career with Pearl (Miss.) High School and the Mississippi Fire. Williams played under head coach Andy Kivlan at Pearl HS where he helped his team four state championship titles in his four seasons (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008). He was also voted the team MVP and earned all-state accolades during his junior season.
Furthermore, he set the Mississippi High School record with 39 assists during his sophomore season.
While playing with the Fire under head coach Kenny White, Williams helped lead the team to four state cup championships (2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005). He also led his team in scoring in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
"Chris is a terrific soccer player who will help us right away," Getman said. "We got to know him through our camps so he has experience working with our coaches. He is going to have a great career at UAB."

Men's Soccer Hires James Prosser as Assistant Coach
ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - A former professional soccer player and University of Louisville assistant coach, James Prosser was named an assistant coach for the University of Central Florida men's soccer team, head coach Bryan Cunningham announced Monday.
Prosser has spent the past two years as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Louisville. In his last season with the Cardinals, Louisville posted an 11-7-4 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. U of L defeated Duke in the first round before falling to Ohio State in the second round.
"We are pleased to have hired a coach with James' range of skills and experience," Cunningham said. "He comes from a very successful program at Louisville, having worked with a great coach in Ken Lolla. He has a good wealth of knowledge and will relate well to our young players."
With the Knights, Prosser will be involved in all aspects of the program, including team and individual training with a focus on attacking play, recruiting and various administrative duties.
"I am excited with the opportunity to coach at UCF, especially with the direction the athletics department is headed," Prosser said. "I am looking forward to building on the success and tradition that the men's soccer program has had in the past. I am excited to work with Bryan [Cunningham] and Jim [Cofer] and am looking forward to meeting the team and helping to take the program to new heights."
Prosser joined the Cardinals prior to the 2006 season after playing for the Minnesota Thunder of the United Soccer League 1st Division from 2004-05. During that time, he was a site coordinator for the Minnesota Thunder camps, overseeing more than 30 sites in the metropolitan Minneapolis area and surrounding cities. In addition to playing for the Thunder, Prosser also coached youth soccer at Shattuck-St. Mary's Academy, the Thunder's youth soccer academy, in Fairbault, Minn., the Wings Soccer Club and was the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at the Academy of Holy Angels.
Before moving to the Gopher State, Prosser played for the Indiana Blast, a United Soccer League 1st Division team, from 2001-03, where he played in 75 games with 46 starts, scoring five goals and dishing out seven assists. He served as a coach for the Blast Soccer Camps and headed the Crusade for Health, conducting clinics and appearances on behalf of the `Blast and Me, Tobacco Free' program. Prosser also coached for several area youth clubs, including the Noblesville Rowdies, Greenfield Strikers and the Indy Revolution.
He spent a year in Wilmington, N.C., in 2000, playing in 22 games with eight starts in helping the Wilmington Hammerheads, a United Soccer League 2nd Division team, capture the Southern Conference Championship and making a quarterfinal appearance in the US Open Cup. He began his professional career in 1999 as a member of the Myrtle Beach Sea Dawgs.
Prosser also has trained internationally with the National Soccer League of Australia's Northern Spirit, the Finnish Premier Division's HJK, the Dutch Eredivise First Divisions' Roda JC and the German Bundesliga's Werder Bremen.
Prosser is a 2001 graduate of Butler University, where he earned a bachelor of arts in education. He played in three NCAA tournaments as a collegian, including two appearances in the round of 16. His teams also claimed three Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships. He finished his college career ranked ninth on the school's all-time points list.
